About IROVT

The International Relations Organization at Virginia Tech (IROVT) is a student-led organization that seeks to bring to light important global issues and seeks to encourage mature dialogue, debate, and open-mindedness among students. IROVT is the only Model United Nations competitive organization at Virginia Tech; our members travel to other universities on the east coast and in Canada, and host our own conferences for middle schools, high schools, and Virginia Tech students.

The Model United Nations component of IROVT encourages organized debate and challenges students to think quickly on their feet. IROVT also conducts awareness campaigns of important issues in the international arena, focusing largely on human rights concerns and the atrocities in Darfur. Each semester, a specific focus is chosen for members to run campaigns about. In the past, we have invited former Sudanese slaves, Darfur activists, and a UN official to speak on campus.

At our meetings, guest speakers ranging from university professors to international students to non-profit organizations' representatives to speak, promoting an open exchange of ideas and exposure otherwise difficult to find. IROVT handed out literature about human trafficking and the crisis in Myanmar. IROVT continues to raise support through fasting fund raisers and benefit concerts to support NGO's. In addition, IROVT upholds a tradition of service, both domestically and internationally, through ventures such as the Appalachia Service Project and Project Esperanza. In all of IROVT's ventures, the organization hopes to build bridges of understanding, continue asking questions, and provoke thought and dialogue at Virginia Tech.

IROVT lost several members on April 16, 2007. For more information about those members please click on the VT ribbon below.
